To those inquiring about studying Ancient Greek with Mr. Beauclerk:

I searched the world (literally) looking for an excellent tutor for my daughter. We live in the United States, and after of a year of searching unsuccessfully, I was happy to finally find what I was looking for in Gwynne Teaching.

My family has been working with Gwynne Teaching since my daughter was six years old. She started with Latin with Miss Gwynne, and after about a year and of her own accord, she asked if she could also study ancient Greek. We inquired, and we were told that she could start the following week.

Mr. Beauclerk, a polymath and incredibly patient teacher, had been working with my daughter for about six months, when she turned to me and said, “Mr. Beauclerk is very nice, but why did I ever ask to study Greek?!”

(N.B. Don’t quit when experiencing momentary frustration or doubt. Keep going!)

I reminded her of why she had asked, and she resolved to persist. The two of them continued, and after a few years (again with infinite patience on Mr. Beauclerk’s part), she had made respectable progress.

Now at 13, my daughter is translating Homer’s Iliad with Mr. Beauclerk and enjoys it immensely. She would never dream of discontinuing her Latin or Greek study, and feels this could be her life’s work. She has built a circle of friends who are studying Latin and Greek, and it is an extraordinary group of teens and young adults. I will not be surprised if they prove to be lifelong friends. What they are doing is difficult and beautiful, and it creates a bond. The best word I can use to describe the experience overall is “profound.”

Last but not least: for those looking for a Latin tutor, once again I only have praise for Gwynne Teaching. Although exams are the least of the ways to measure success for my purposes, I think it is noteworthy that Miss Gwynne prepared my daughter to take her first National Latin Exam at the age of seven years old, and my daughter scored Cum Laude. She then scored Suma Cum Laude on her next two National Latin Exams.

I have set it elsewhere and will say it again: Miss Gwynne inspires her students to do their very best work, not only in the particular course of study, but in all aspects of life. In doing so, she has greatly enriched our lives.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Miss Gwynne and Mr. Beauclerk.
